Trigger Point Therapy in Austin: What to Expect at Your First Session
Trigger point therapy is a massage technique that uses sustained, focused pressure on specific tight or tender spots in a muscle. Instead of long gliding strokes, the therapist finds one spot and holds steady pressure on it before moving to the next. At Bodywork Traditions, I offer trigger point therapy as an in-home massage in Bee Cave, Lakeway, and West Austin.
What does trigger point therapy feel like?
Trigger point therapy feels focused. I press into one spot with a thumb, knuckle, or elbow and hold it steady, usually anywhere from several seconds to about a minute.
The sensation can be intense. Some people describe a strong ache right under the pressure. Others notice the sensation spreading to a nearby area. Everyone's experience is different, and I don't promise any particular feeling or outcome.
You're in charge of the pressure the whole time. If a spot feels like too much, say so and I'll ease off right away. I'd rather check in often than have you grit your teeth through a session.
How is trigger point therapy different from deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes that travel along a muscle. Trigger point therapy uses pressure that stays in one place.
Both can use deep pressure. The difference is movement. Deep tissue covers a broader area in a flowing way, while trigger point work zeroes in on individual spots you point out or that I find along the way.
In my sessions I usually blend the two. We move between broader deep tissue strokes and held pressure on specific spots, depending on what you ask for.
Who tends to book trigger point therapy?
People who book trigger point work with me usually want pressure that's genuinely deep. A lot of them have tried massage elsewhere and found it too light.
Some clients have one or two areas they want real time spent on, like the shoulders or upper back. Trigger point work lets me stay on those areas instead of rushing past them.
Other clients book because they don't want to drive anywhere after a massage. With in-home sessions in Bee Cave, Lakeway, or West Austin, you can stay put when we're done.
What happens during the session?
I come to your home and set up in whatever room works for you. Before we start, we talk for a few minutes about which areas you want me to focus on and how much pressure you like.
Then I get to work. I often start with broader deep tissue strokes and shift to held pressure on the spots we talked about.
I check in about pressure as we go. You can change your mind at any point, whether that means more pressure, less, or a different area.
Every session is 90 minutes. You also get the same therapist every time. I learn your preferences over time, so you don't have to explain them again at each visit.

Yes. Most of my sessions combine both techniques. Tell me what you'd like when you book, and we'll confirm it before we start.
Do you come to my home?

How long is a session, and how much does it cost?
Every session is 90 minutes. The price is $220 flat.
Will I see the same therapist every time?
